Prof. Panayot Tanchev, PhD

Prof. Tanchev finished primary school n his native town of Vratsa and later, in 1967, the English Language High School in Sofia. Later he studied in the Medical University of Sofia where he graduated as a qualifed doctor in 1973. Then he went back to his home town and started work in the Orthopedy and Traumatology Dept. of the “Christo Botev” District Hospital. He stayed there during the period of 1973-1977.

In 1977, against very hard competition, he won the position of a full-time PhD student in Leipzig, Germany, where he specialized orthopedy and traumatology for 3 years in the University Orthopedic Clinic, one of the biggest orthopedic clinics in Germany at that time. Among his teachers were prof. Peter Matzen, prof. Harro Seyfarth and prof. Wolfram Neumann, all names of renown in German medicine. In Leipzig he defended his PhD dissertation and passed with a „magna cum laude” (with great praise), which was an indisputable success for a foreigner.

He came back to his country although he was offered the post of an assistant professor by the clinic manager prof. Seyfarth. Since 1980 he has been working in the Specialized University Hospital of Orthopedy – Gorna Banya in Sofia where he climbed all steps of the academic hierarchy from assistant professor to full professorship. Since 1989 he had been the Head of Second Orthopedic Clinic at the Gorna Banya Hospital whose profile is spine surgery and endoprosthetics (artificial joints fixation).

Meanwhile prof. Tanchev has specialized for different periods of time in France, the USA and Switzerland. He has dedicated more than 35 years to incessant work in the sphere of orthopedic surgery. We are honourd to use him as a major consultant to our hospital.
